Three Backpackers

Three Backpackers

The sun had set not long ago and the bars at San Pedro La Laguna started to attract crowd of backpackers. Reggae music were playing in most of the bars and there were live bands setting up for their show of the night. It was just like a routine here every night, even the tourists who comes here, they were just merely looking for a big party for the night. But what’s different are the stories inside everyone’s heart.

San Pedro La laguna is a Guatemalan town located on the southwest shore of Lake Atitlan. This little town is located beneath the volcano San Pedro. At the busiest side of the town has a pier and a crossroad where the bars located near the pier, and that’s the only place where people going out at night. And there were red color tuk-tuk drivers waiting to get some business. Generally it was a fairly quiet and not a busy place.

With its cool climate and bars with plenty of empty seats, there stood two young man who just met at the crossroad and they were about to going out. Here’s the conversation:

  • “Where does your friend stay?”;
  • “He’s staying with a host family and that place is just around the corner”;
  • “Is he from Australia too?”;
  • “No, he’s South African and we met in Peru a few months ago and he happened to be here at the time.”

They walked further down the crossroad and went inside an old flat to look for his friend. They saw a Guatemalan woman sitting on the staircase and after a short conversation they found that he was out! Both of them walked out of the flat and heading back to the crossroad to try their luck since San Pedro La Laguna is a village. After awhile, a blonde hair young man holding a bottle of beer in his hand came in and walked along with them. It was him!

One of them got to know a new friend and another one reunited with him.

“So, do you guys wanna get a beer first before I bring you to my favourite spot in this town?”

They came out from an old mini market just across the road with a beer in their hand and it’s time to go to his favourite spot in the town. He brought them to the pier, it was dark and there’s only light came from the town but the light was bright enough to let them see the walkway at the pier. They sat down at the edge of the pier, took off their shoes and soaked their legs into the Lake Atitlan. The water was cold and dark as if there is fish monster that lives inside. Looking out from the pier there’s the big lake and right opposite was the Indian Nose mountain, and behind the town was the volcano San Pedro. Looking up to the sky, a lot of stars can be seen clearly without any clouds.

The three young men had something in common which they’d been on the road for quite awhile and they were in their early 20s. The music from the bars in the town can be heard softly and the noises from the drunk crowd too. The three youngster were not going to party nor getting drunk because no one could do that always when traveling for a long period. They rather talk about the passion for traveling and share a lot of amazing stories with each other. Even though they have just known each other, there ain’t no better feeling when you get to meet other travellers that share the same interest, the earnest and spirit for traveling.

To be able to travel in the early 20s was something they appreciate, it is fun to travel at this age and not everyone would have or take this opportunity. With some beer cans beside them, they were sharing their experience with each other and three of them put a smile on their faces. An Australian, a South African and a Malaysian, we all came from different continent and met at another side of the world. As we shook our legs that soaked in the lake, the ripple dispersed to the other side of the lake as if we were telling stories to all the people at the other side of the lake.
